309 \item[Quality:]
310 Choose the quality here (0 to 7). Default is 5, best quality is 7,
311 smallest file size is 0. This setting effects how much your sound
312 sample will be compressed. Higher quality settings result in larger
313 MP3 files.
314
315 The quality setting is just a way of selecting an average bit rate,
316 or number of bits per second, for a recording. When this setting
317 is lowered, recordings are compressed more (meaning worse sound quality),
318 and the average bitrate changes as follows.

333
334 \begin{description}
335 \item[Frequency:]
336 Choose the recording frequency (sample rate) -- 48kHz, 44.1kHz, 32kHz and
337 24kHz, 22.05kHz, 16kHz are available. Higher sample rates use up more disk
338 space, but give better sound quality.
339 This setting determines which frequency range can accurately be reproduced
340 during playback, Lower frequencies produce smaller files.
341 \opt{MASCODEC}{
342 The frequency setting also determines which version of the MPEG standard
343 the sound is recorded using:\\
344 MPEG v1 for 48, 44.1 and 32\\
345 MPEG v2 for 24, 22.05 and 16\\
346 }
347
348 \item[Source:]
349 Choose the source of the recording. This can be
350 \opt{recorder,recorderv2fm,h1xx}{SPDIF (digital),} microphone or line in.
351 \opt{CONFIG_TUNER}{For recording from the radio see page \pageref{ref:FMradio}.}
352
353 \opt{recorder,recorderv2fm,h100}
354 {\note{You cannot change the sample rate for digital recordings.}}
355
356 \item[Channels:]
357 This allows you to select mono or stereo recording. Please note that
358 for mono recording, only the left channel is recorded. Mono recordings
359 are usually somewhat smaller than stereo.
360
361 \item[Independent Frames:]
362 The independent frames option tells the \dap\ to encode with the bit
363 reservoir disabled, so the frames are independent of each other. This
364 makes a file easier to edit.
365
366 \item[Time Split:]
367 This option is useful when timing recordings. If set to active it stops
368 a recording at a given interval and then starts recording again with a
369 new file, which is useful for long term recordings.
370 \newline
371 The splits are seamless (frame accurate), no audio is lost at the split
372 point. The break between recordings is only the time required to stop
373 and restart the recording, on the order of 2 -- 4 seconds.
374 \newline
375 Options (hours:minutes between splits): off, 24:00, 18:00, 12:00, 10:00,
376 8:00, 6:00, 4:00, 2:00, 1:20 (80 minute CD), 1:14 (74 minute CD), 1:00,
377 00:30, 00:15, 00:10, 00:05.
378
379 \item[Prerecord Time:]
380 This setting buffers a small amount of audio so that when the record button
381 is pressed, the recording will begin from that number of seconds earlier.
382 This is useful for ensuring that a recording begins before a cue that is
383 being waited for.\\
384 Options: Off, 1 -- 30 seconds
385
386 \item[Directory:]
387 Allows changing the location where the recorded files are saved. The
388 default location is \fname{/recordings}.
389
390 \item[Show recording screen on startup:]
391 If set to yes, the \dap\ will start up with the while recording screen
392 showing.\\
393 Options: Yes, No\\
394
395 \item[Clipping Light:]
396 Causes the backlight to flash on when clipping has been detected.\\

7 Entering the \setting{Recording} option in the \setting{Main Menu} brings up
8 a screen in wich you can choose to enter the \setting{Recording Screen} or
9 the \setting{Recording Settings} (see below). The \setting{Recording Screen}
10 shows the time elapsed and the size of the file being recorded. A peak meter
11 is present to allow you set Gain correctly. There is also a volume setting,
12 this will only affect the output level of the \dap\ and does \emph{not}
13 affect the recorded sound.
14 \opt{MASCODEC}{The frequency, channels and quality}
15 \opt{SWCODEC}{The frequency and channels} settings are shown on the last line.
16
17 The controls for this screen are:

70 \item[Quality:]
71 Choose the quality here (0 to 7). Default is 5, best quality is 7,
72 smallest file size is 0. This setting effects how much your sound
73 sample will be compressed. Higher quality settings result in larger
74 MP3 files.
75
76 The quality setting is just a way of selecting an average bit rate,
77 or number of bits per second, for a recording. When this setting
78 is lowered, recordings are compressed more (meaning worse sound quality),
79 and the average bitrate changes as follows.

97 \item[Frequency:]
98 Choose the recording frequency (sample rate) -- 48kHz, 44.1kHz, 32kHz and
99 24kHz, 22.05kHz, 16kHz are available. Higher sample rates use up more disk
100 space, but give better sound quality.
101 This setting determines which frequency range can accurately be reproduced
102 during playback, Lower frequencies produce smaller files.
103 \opt{MASCODEC}{
104 The frequency setting also determines which version of the MPEG standard
105 the sound is recorded using:\\
106 MPEG v1 for 48, 44.1 and 32\\
107 MPEG v2 for 24, 22.05 and 16\\
108 }
109 }
110 \item[Source:]
111 Choose the source of the recording. This can be
112 \opt{recorder,recorderv2fm,h1xx}{SPDIF (digital),} microphone or line in.
113 \opt{CONFIG_TUNER}{For recording from the radio see page \pageref{ref:FMradio}.}

117 {\note{You cannot change the sample rate for digital recordings.}}
118
119 \opt{MASCODEC,x5}{
120 \item[Channels:]
121 This allows you to select mono or stereo recording. Please note that
122 for mono recording, only the left channel is recorded. Mono recordings
123 are usually somewhat smaller than stereo.
124 }
125
126 \opt{MASCODEC}{
127 \item[Independent Frames:]
128 The independent frames option tells the \dap\ to encode with the bit
129 reservoir disabled, so the frames are independent of each other. This
130 makes a file easier to edit.
131 }
132
133 \item[Time Split:]
134 This option is useful when timing recordings. If set to active it stops
135 a recording at a given interval and then starts recording again with a
136 new file, which is useful for long term recordings.
137 \newline
138 The splits are seamless (frame accurate), no audio is lost at the split
139 point. The break between recordings is only the time required to stop
140 and restart the recording, on the order of 2 -- 4 seconds.
141 \newline
142 Options (hours:minutes between splits): off, 24:00, 18:00, 12:00, 10:00,
143 8:00, 6:00, 4:00, 2:00, 1:20 (80 minute CD), 1:14 (74 minute CD), 1:00,
144 00:30, 00:15, 00:10, 00:05.
145
146 \item[Prerecord Time:]
147 This setting buffers a small amount of audio so that when the record button
148 is pressed, the recording will begin from that number of seconds earlier.
149 This is useful for ensuring that a recording begins before a cue that is
150 being waited for.\\
151 Options: \setting{Off}, \setting{1 -- 30 seconds}
152
153 \item[Directory:]
154 Allows changing the location where the recorded files are saved. The
155 default location is \fname{/recordings}.
156
157 \item[Show recording screen on startup:]
158 If set to yes, the \dap\ will start up with the while recording screen
159 showing.\\
160 Options: \setting{Yes}, \setting{No}
161
162 \item[Clipping Light:]
163 Causes the backlight to flash on when clipping has been detected.\\
164 Options: \setting{Off}, \setting{Remote unit only},
165 \setting{Main and remote unit}, \setting{Main unit only}.
